Great Lakes Gardener’s August Checklist

Pick the peppers and drink in the scent of lilies this month, while you mull over a mowing strip to make fall gardening easier says Barbara Pintozzi, a Houzz Contributor. She continues saying it’s too soon for fall planting of perennials and shrubs, but it’s a good time to sow seeds for cool-weather crops. Hopefully, by the time the little seedlings get going, the cooler days of autumn will be upon us and we’ll be able to enjoy a second harvest of such goodies as lettuce and carrots. Pintozzi says: A garden of prairie natives reaches its peak in August, with coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea), gayfeather (Liatris spicata) and Joe-pye weed (Eupatorium ‘Phantom’).
