In the 1950’s, founder of the company, Klaus, came to the U.S. to work in the Chicago area from Germany where he was a highly regarded master gardener. As a young man he was strong, confident and full of the entrepreneurial spirit.  He knew his experience, expertise, and concern for others was all he needed and in 1960 began Schmechtig Landscapes. As his clientele grew, Klaus began to expand the company by adding employees and services.

Growing up in the business and inspired to practice landscape architecture by his grandfather and father, Michael Schmechtig joined the company in 1987, bringing fellow landscape architects and horticulturalists with the same passion to create stunning outdoor environments to the company.  Today, under his leadership, the firm continues to grow and serve the finest properties in Chicago and its North Shore and Northwest suburbs drawing its inspiration, philosophy and methodology implemented by Klaus when the company began.

Landscape Maintenance Account Manager
We are looking for a Landscape Maintenance Account Manager. This position requires thorough knowledge of landscape maintenance and maintenance enhancement procedures; 5 years minimum experience as a supervisor or foreman overseeing and maintaining high end residential properties managing multiple crews; knowledge of estimating, production rates and job costing; excellent understanding of maintenance and horticultural practices. Maintenance Account Managers will be responsible for additional sales and client satisfaction. Candidates must have a horticulture degree or certificate and driver’s license with a clean record. Landscape industry certified and bilingual in Spanish is a plus.


Irrigation and Lighting Service Department Manager
We currently have a full time position available for an Irrigation and Lighting Service Department Manager. This position schedules and directs personnel and resources towards providing quality services to Schmechtig Landscape clients.  The Irrigation and Lighting Service Department Manager manages the department services, including the materials, technicians, equipment and subcontractors required to produce quality work providing day-to-day operational scheduling and guidance.  This position will report to the Maintenance Manager and requires a minimum of 5 years prior customer service management and leadership experience within a landscape industry organization including 1-2 years supervisory experience.  As the Irrigation and Lighting Service Department Manager you will obtain and maintain certifications and licenses needed to perform work in local markets; work with technicians to ensure clients are satisfied and as necessary perform hands-on work with techs to meet deadlines; new account sales; have an understanding and knowledge of all operations in an Irrigation and Lighting Service Department with a focus on safety.  Job duties to include: direct operations of the department including monitor costs, daily work orders and route scheduling; timesheet processing; update service order notes to client records; preparation of forecasts and budget both monthly and annually; recommendations for annual expenditures; billing and resolution of client billing issues; facilitate quality control of service and installation projects; create estimates.  Candidates must be proactive and a self-starter with excellent leadership and organization skills within an organization, irrigation and/or landscape industry experience with a proven track record; driver’s license with a clean record; 2 or 4 year degree in a business related field or equivalent experience is required. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.


2017 Seasonal Positions Open

Irrigation/Lighting Technician:
We are seeking an Irrigation/Lighting Technician. The candidate will be responsible for the start-up, shut-down, repair and installation of residential irrigation systems and low voltage lighting systems.  Must be able to diagnose, troubleshoot and conduct all irrigation repairs pertaining to wiring, valves, heads, controllers etc. and proficient in the use of basic maintenance hand tools: shovel, water hose, quick coupler key, and wire tracker. Candidate must have 3 years work experience in irrigation/lighting service and a valid driver’s license with a clean record.


Irrigation/Lighting Field Support Laborer:
We are looking an Irrigation/Lighting Field Support people to work with us through the 2017 landscape season to perform duties such as dig trenches for irrigation and low voltage lighting systems or piping and support the irrigation technician or manager in the repairs and installation of the irrigation systems.
No experience necessary, the irrigation technician will train.  This is a great entry level position for a career in irrigation and low voltage lighting.
Seasonal Landscape Maintenance Crew - Foreman:
We are looking for Foreman to work with us through the 2017 landscape season to perform the following duties:  Supervise landscape crew of 2 to 4 laborers; perform routine landscape services inclusive of (but not limited to) mowing, edging, pruning, planting, debris removal, etc.; ensure landscape jobs are completed per contract specifications; assist laborers with the proper use of landscape equipment; enforce safety; keep track of crew hours;  submit daily time sheets to Account Manager; maintain communication with Account Manager regarding status of the mowing schedule, job completion, crew performance, etc.; demonstrate courteous and professional customer service skills; communicate clearly and effectively with customers; ensure landscape equipment is working properly; make sure you keep trailer inventory up to date.  Candidate must have a driver’s license with a clean record and worked on crews as a seasonal landscape maintenance field support worker for 3 years.


Seasonal Landscape Maintenance Crew - Field Support Laborer
We are looking for field crew support people to work with us through the 2017 landscape season to perform landscape duties:  mowing, edging, trimming, planting, debris removal and more. 
No experience required.  We will train. This is a great entry level position for a career in landscaping.


Plant Health Care Technician
We are looking for a Plant Health Care Technician to implement the company’s treatment program.  The candidate will assist in plant and turf care program of both residential and commercial accounts. Duties include pest and disease identification and diagnosis, fertilizer and chemical applications to lawns and landscape plants. Candidates must be able to obtain a pesticide license; training is available and must have a driver’s license with a clean record.
